my 92 gmc k1500 exhaust temperature is 400 deg F.?
I took a digital temperature reading today 7pm and the outside temperature was 73deg F . when I got home from shopping, I tested the laser temperature guage I bought and to my surprise , the reading I got at the tail pipe exhaust was 400deg F.. is this normal??? truck was idling. I put my hands in and sure enough it was very hot , i cant leave my hands very long..

Where do you live that it's 73F?
I need to live there, also!
And, yes, that is completely normal.
If you were to point it at the exhaust manifold you'd see upwards of 1,000F.

That's normal. Usually he temperature is checked before and after the converter to make sure the converter is working.
