Question involving a romance in my novel?

I'm by no means writing a romance novel - the focus of my story is more war and politics in a high fantasy setting. However, I do want a small side romance in the novel. I definitely don't want a love triangle, but I'm worried it's going to turn into one. I have one guy I want my main character to fall in love with, and another guy I want to be more of a protective best friend. The problem is, I'm not sure how to have her fall in love with the boy I want her with when the other boy is more of a best friend to her, and it seems like I'm going to end up with a love triangle on my hands which I really don't want. Any ideas for how to avoid a love triangle in this case or other advice?

To eliminate the idea of the best friend being jealous, try to include a scene where he confronts the other guy to talk to him about treating the girl right and having him to answer to or such. Try to not drag along the overprotectiveness for too long of it definitely starts to feel jealous and unexpressed feelings. If you make sure to resolve it (as in the best friend backs off, gives blessing or finally comes to like the guy) within a reasonable time frame, it wont sound too love triangle-y

Just some tips. If you play the dialogue right, it can be easily averted. That's where this is going to get tricky - finding the right dialogue.

    MY CHARACTER BIBLE

    CHARACTER: BEST FRIEND (MALE)

    HEADING: Sexual attraction

This male friend character definitely does not like his female friend in a romantic way, but rather sees her as a sister. He cares a lot about her because... His affection for the female friend though might get in the way of her future love interests which is why he will have to learn to back off in the future.

Usually this kind of thing I can naturally do without much of an issue. I just avoid all scenes with googly eyes and obsessive flirting.

If you are still struggling then why not make him gay, in love with someone else or a centaur / some other magical creature without human sex organs - lets just hope your female character isn't into bestiality. :P

Make the best friend gay. Problem solved.
