I have a question about shelters.?

Why do people in the southeastern united states act like animal shelters and pet stores are the same thing? Pet stores are profit motivated so of course they'll hand an animal to anyone, shelters are concerned with finding loving appropriate homes for the animals in their care.

And secondary question, why do they not follow the rules the shelter has put in place to protect the animals? For example, not using hand Sanitizer between animals or not going into the enclosures marked staff only? Do people not realize that even a sneeze can mean death for a shelter animal?

Well sadly, people still don't see pets as important members of this earth, much people still get pets and throw them outside once they don't want them anymore.

Pet stores should have rules, but they don't they just want money, and they will sell anything to anyone. I already saw people buy small pets, and they had told the clerk they would just keep it for that day and then leave it outside. The clerk did not care the least bit.

And for your second question, they do not do it, because they are not forced to do it. Why would they, it is so much easier to not go the extra mile.

I'm not sure where you are talking about in the southeastern part of the U.S. I'm in NJ & volunteer at our local animal shelter. We have all worked hard here, to get the pet stores out of the malls & are succeeding. The pet store at our local mall now belongs to our animal shelter. We follow strict rules on sanitizing our hands between animals, for staff, volunteers & visitors. We have containers of hand sanitizers all over & if people want to handle the animals, before adopting them we remind them to clean their hands. The adoption counselors also discuss the animals in great length with adopters, to make sure they get animals that are right for them. The adoption counselors are also careful about sending animals into certain home, to ensure the animals with feel comfortable in their environments.
