Laptop not recognizing ethernet cable?

I am currently at a relative's house and I brought my laptop. She has a desktop computer with internet, but she does not have wireless. I've stayed here before and always just hooked her ethernet cable into my laptop whenever I needed to. It always worked before. Suddenly my laptop won't even recognize the ethernet cable. It just says I'm not connected. I haven't changed any settings, so I think I have all the settings set up correctly. Any suggestions?

Also, I have an HP computer with Windows 7 64-bit if that matters.

Are you putting the cable between the computing gadget and the laptop? if so, you will possibly could desire to apply an ethernet crossover cable. once you're putting the cable from the internet source into the computing gadget, then make confident in community Connections the LAN is enabled (you are able to disable it)
