Where does the phrase "a pinch of experience is worth a peck of theory" come from?

If you can give detail on what it means that would be helpful too.

I am not sure as to the origin, but I may guess that it is British or American in origin due to the measurements used. Peck is an imperial (English) and customary American unit of dry measure equal to about two gallons. The saying means that something experienced even in small measure is of much greater validity than something that is theorized about. For example, someone who has never had children but has a degree in child psychology may have all sorts of ideas and theories about how children should be dealt with and raised, but a person who has actually given birth and raised kids may be respected as the better authority on the subject.
