What could be wrong with my computer?
I had a power surge and apparently my surge protector is useless. Afterward, nothing happened when you push the power button. Even when directly plugging the computer into a proven outlet. I replaced the power supply and now the power button turns amber but nothing happens. No fans or anything. My questions are does it matter where each SATA connector goes between the HDD, DVD, and CDRW? At this point should I assume I need a new motherboard? Is a CMOS battery failure wishful thinking? I'm not a computer guy, just a DIYer, so feel free to dumb down your answers. Thanks in advance!

Hello
It sound motherboard. But to get clear here, What type of CPU you have? What is you PSU model and Brand?. Also do this, disconnect all SATA powers from you CD and HDD and turn own the power. This way we may know if a motherboard issue ok.
PM if you still need more help.

Assuming the new PSU is powerful enough. CMOS battery would not normally cause non-boot - BIOS'd just revert to default settings
Disconnect everything from the sata sockets, and remove the ram cards and PCI cards. Does it fire up any better now?
If not, it's probably mobo and/or CPU.
If it fires up better, then keep turning it off, reconnecting one thing and seeing if it boots until you find out what is stopping it booting.
Get a decent surge protector as soon as you can. Some come with a guarantee......
