The hardest part for any new freshman is being away from home for the first time and not knowing anybody. The thing to remember is that all the freshmen are in the same boat. The university will make a special effort to have mixers and opportunities for you to meet new people and make friends. Use them, and keep an open mind about people. Remember, too, the school has all sorts of resources, seek them out and use them.

Secondly, all that freedom makes it really easy to spend all your time socializing. The hardest thing to learn is time management.

When you get your class schedule, get a planner or calendar or app and map out class time and map out homework and study time. (Map out some down time, too.) But your study time should be inviolate. Figure three hours homework for each hour of class.

For big assignments, break them down into manageable-sized chunks, block out time to do the parts and plan on finishing a day before they are due. That way, you have time to review them, or account for any emergencies. (Proof-read, proof-read, proof-read.)

These are the two biggies. When (not if) sometimes things go badly, remind yourself that millions of people have been through freshman doldrums and survived. You will, too.

That is an intelligent question and one that most college-bound students never think about until the shock of it all sets in. I think that a person of your superior intellect probably already knows the answer. The biggest shock that most kids straight out of high school find out is that the professors don't keep track of your study habits and if you don't make it, they really don't give a crap. Suddenly, it's all up to you to either succeed or fail. You can spend your time partying, playing cards, or worse, waste your time on video games all you want. Nobody is there to stop you (unless you have a good friend to wake you up!) For the most part, you are now expected to act as an adult and put away your childish ways. That is the hardest transition for most high schoolers to university.

Focus on your studies. In university it is so easy to get distracted by partying. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have fun, but you aren't paying a bunch of money to party... you are paying a bunch of money to learn a career. Make sure you are doing well in school first. I screwed around my first three semesters, and it has been a royal pain in the butt trying to get my GPA back to where it needs to be. Make sure you study hard.

Oh and if somebody tries to sell you an elevator pass... Don't fall for it ;)

Silly as it sounds, don't go and party your way through your first year. Really make sure your academics are up to par and take it seriously. One screwed up semester can leave you stranded for the rest of your college career. Also, don't take totally pointless classes unless you are 110% sure you can afford to. Take interesting classes if possible but not pointless. Oh, and don't group all your sciences, english, math, etc courses together in one semester. It can get seriously confusing and be super stressful. Good luck! You'll be fine!

Source(s): college sophomore (almost junior) who knows many people who are now screwed

surely, in my adventure, there have been a lot less tests and assignments, yet they required extra attempt and time to finish. i have had many instructions the position the total grade change into in holding with an essay and a couple of tests. you won't be able to precisely fail a midterm and turn your grade round. even with the indisputable fact that, there change right into a drastic enhance in interpreting assignments. college calls for various of time administration and study skills. the individuals who don't prevail are those who do not turn in assignments, pass type, and under no circumstances study or do the readings. (In college, you've finished administration over a even as, and some scholars use their time poorly via partying quite of interpreting). surely, each and every thing coated in lecture and each and every thing interior the readings are straightforward interest for exam questions. in case you're taking good notes in lecture, take notes on the readings, and evaluation really each day, you'd be effective. the overall suggestion is to study a million-2hrs outdoors of sophistication each and each and every week for each hour you spend in college. each and each and every semester is diverse, so which think ofyou've got to regulate your study time after the first couple of weeks. My suggestion: get a good planner to keep song of assignments. start up assignments once a chance as they're going to oftentimes take longer than you're used to in severe college. continually evaluation your notes later that exact same evening, conventional individual some thing you in straight forward words won't be able to comprehend, and e-mail or drop via your professor's workplace hours to get help. surely, for the first couple of papers, flow in and ask your professor to look over a demanding draft. because you commonly in straight forward words have a paper or 2 in holding with type, you won't be able to discover the money for to thoroughly bomb one, so ask for help/have then look over a demanding draft in the previous you turn it in. also, no less than, skim all of your readings for the significant concepts in the previous the lecture. you'd be lost in lecture in case you do not have a accepted idea of what the problem is.
