Is this normal? my dog ate her puppies?

She is only two years old, there is no problem with her. She eats well, she is healthy and as well spoiled, i love chip mu dog. She gave birth to 4pups and she ate them. I dont know whybbut my grandmanjust told me she ate her pups. I dontnknow if they were born dead or alive. After she ate them, later she puked her pups. It is really disgusting and sad i want to have little puppies.

Normal no but it can happen. This is a female that should never be bred again. There is a variety of reasons such as the female is to immature (age doesn't mean anything) , female has neurological disorder. Not all females are ready or know what to do when they have puppies. They are fearful of the little blobs that has caused them pain and it is natural to destroy the problem. Not all females want puppies but humans have their own agenda without consideration for the dog. The end of your last sentence sounds very selfish (" I want to have puppies")

I think this is a bit odd. And your right it is disgusting as well. Eww.. she puked them back up? I think my dog ate her puppies as well and I cried and was angry for quite a while. I was looking forward to seeing my dog give birth. I had homes for them though. My close friend wanted one of them, my moms friedn wanted one and my grandma that is seventy years old and very healthy wanted one as well. She was only going to have three. I was almost positive that she was going into labor that night and went I woke up the next day I went with friend to go play tennis early in the morning and when I came back I didn't see anything so I though maybe it was a fake labour. But now when I look back I think that she just ate them because it was her first labour. I think your dog just ate them because she jjust didn't know who they were. Also I'm sorry for your losses.

There are many reason's she could have done this ,please get her spayed .A good breeder does not leave the side of her female dog ever when she is delivering and when she has the pups , so many things can go wrong . I sleep near her , and if it is my bulldogs which are notorious for being bad mothers I have to get up every two hours to give her the pups to feed then take them away until next feeding . Since the animals can't talk it is just speculation why a mother would do this but please wait until your older to decide if you want to breed and then know about breeding..

I have two 9 month old german shepherds & that is exactly what they USED to do, the vet said they would grow out of it but I later discovered it is due to the dog still being hungry & when they have a pooh they can still smell food in it hence why they eat their pooh!!! This has all changed (along with their behaviour-for the better) when I weaned them off their dry food onto a raw meat diet, I buy pet mince from the butchers, they have fruit & veg once a week and thrive on it & no more pooh eating!!! The food is alot cheaper & the dogs are alot more healthier & happier as they are fullfilled.. No chewing either as this is a sign of hunger. Hope this helps & consider a change of diet as feeding a dog dryed or tinned food is like feed a child a diet of haribo & pot noodle!!! Good Luck 

I would suggest that although very far from 'normal', it does happen. It's more likely to happen with just one puppy, if she knew there was something wrong (and her breeder hadn't identified this, via their vet, before this had to happen). Bitches who feel treatened, most often by being around other household pets when whelping/nursing, will often turn on their puppies as a last misguided attempt to protect them. Again once the person watching over her and her litter realises this is going on, they will have taken her off her litter, only allowing them back on to feed at regular intervals.

In other words, much as if this was up to your grandmother and not your fault, this kind of thing should NEVER be allowed to happen.

Hopefully you are not trolling (or maybe are trolling!!), because it's not only unnecessary, but extremely sad for all concerned. Please get your gran to take her in for a spay in 2 months time. She should NOT be put in whelp again.

If it was her first litter, she probably didn't know what they were.

    And woah, gross, tmi.

Also, I'd recommend not breeding puppies unless you know how to care for them and intend to keep them even when they're big.

Also, if you want puppies, adopt them from the pound. There are so many being killed every day, why would you bring more into the world when you could save some? :)

Also, get her desexed. Even if you had puppies, until you got them desexed, they'd probably inbreed and you don't want that, as they'll have deformed babies. Also, you'll definitely not be able to afford all the costs (vaccinations, food, flea treatments, etc.) and be a good owner for so many puppies. You'll end up pounding them. Please, be humane and just adopt a puppy if you want one so bad.

Sounds like she was never meant to be a mother. She needs to be spayed. Likely she would do the same to other litters.

and you don't want a litter of puppies. Those puppies would need homes, and finding permanent homes for dogs is nearly impossible anymore.

This dog will never make a suitable mother and until you are grown up, you will never be a suitable breeder.. so forget it.

If you want to be a responsible breeder later on then start reading what you should do to breed properly.

    http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeding.html

then hopefully you will not be a byb who contributes to the poor dogs stuck in shelters or worse, gets gassed in a horrible way because there are too many to find homes for.

    Spay your b*tch.

Well it is kind of odd, but my cat tried to do the same thing when she had babies. This is because it causes them so much pain and they cant understand why, i guess. I am sorry for the loss :(

She knew they would be adding to the impounded dog population, at fault of her ignorant owner, so she anti-birthed them.
