What to do, where to go when you're lonely?

First off, well done for embracing the internet. Many people over a certain age won't even give it a try, so you've got the right attitude and you aren't afraid to try new things.

But when it comes to friendship and relationships, in this case, it may be best to leave the internet well alone. You can't trust everyone you meet, and there are plenty of opportunists out there.

But there are other ways the internet can help you. Look around for activities in your community and get involved. Think about what interests you, and see if there are any local possibilities.

Volunteer. Organise charity events.

You are more likely to meet like-minded people by finding a cause, and leading a fulfilling lifestyle doing the things you enjoy.

If you don't want to join a dating website, there are lots of other options. You could try new hobbies, go to over 50 coffee mornings, etc. Even if you are mot religious, churches often hold coffee mornings for people to meet without the need to pray or sing hymns. However, don't be afraid of dating websites, they're not all bad. You do have to be careful though, but you sound knowledgeable enough to take care of yourself online. Good luck :-)
