Why, in cattle sorting, are the cows numbered 0 through 9?

Why not 1 through 10?

    0-9 are all one digit numbers. From horseback, with a herd of cattle, you can see on number better than two. If there was a '10' you might only see half the number, the '1' or the '0', and cut the wrong cow out. That's much less likely with 1-10

    Becuase there only one digit. An when ur on horse back it's hard to see two mumbers
