What does Adobe Acrobat do?
Lets see how much Acrobat costs... ~$800 or so? ~$180 with my student discount? What the hell does it do? I have a very old Acrobat 6 which I used for combining/splitting PDFs and printing stuff to make them PDFs, but now it doesn't work with new fancy windows 7,8. I really don't feel like shelling out big bucks for just those functions. What else can Acrobat do? BTW, don't give me alternatives, I'm sick of new free software, and if I must give up these features, so be it.

It doesn't cost anywhere near what you are claiming. I have Adobe Acrobat X standard that cost just over 200.00. Even the Professional version doesn't cost what you said.
The average home user would only need the Standard version. Even some businesses can get by on that one. The professional has more features than the Standard, but you'd have to go to adobe's website and read the comparision between the two to see if you need those extra features. I doubt you do, but I don't know what you need.
Expect to spend in the 200.00 to 300.00 range for Adobe Acrobat current version. All depends on where you buy it and which you get (standard vs Professional). Type "Adobe Acrobat software" in any search and you can see who sells it. Amazon.com is hard to beat in prices but sometimes you can. I bought mine straight from the Adobe website.

You can get a free PDF editor.
Otherwise, Adobe Acrobat is available for some really good deals such as on sites like this:
