Are religious people afraid of the unknown?

Does religion give them a false sense of security as well as imparting them with secret knowledge only meant for them. Somehow making them feel special and protected.

Do try refute skepticism simply so they can keep their world nice and tidy with no unknowns to frighten

them?

Do they think they are so fragile without their beliefs that their lives would just crumble apart? Maybe they need lessons in self esteem.

Update:

I am an atheist. I embrace the unknown. It is in the unknown that great scientific discoveries are made. The unknown is where man can posit any and all things and not have to believe any.

Update 2:

Thinking of death or dying causes upset while alive. I hate what I will miss. My daughter giving birth, grandchildren, friend, etc. however, once I am dead none of that will matter. It will all cease. So it is only the moments leading up to death and I fear the sadness that will come with it. Not the death itself.

Everyone is afraid of the unknown.

The problem with religious believers, is that they have invented thousands of gods over the past 10,000 years in an effort to explain the unknown.

I think a lot of people don't know the meaning of their lives. So, would you rather live simply not knowing? Sauntering and tottering around like a blithering idiot? Strive for answers and explore. Science won't save you at the end.

You missed 2 words. I think you wanted to write "do they try to refute..." but instead you wrote "do try refute..."

They don't understand the world, and they don't trust the people who do.

Yes, they suffer from cognitive dissonance.
