If you don't have to worry about supplying your astronauts with a trip home, it's much easier to get boots on Mars....

But... if it were me... I'd want the option of going home.

A one way manned trip to mars is a fantastic idea. It would eliminate the need of bringing a return vehicle and fuel which drastically reduces the price and difficulty. The only problem with it is the obvious "one way" part... but that's not as dooming as some people think, there would be video communication back to earth albeit with an extreme lag but still it'd work... And i can guarantee you that there wouldn't be any shortage of volunteers. Just think about it, being the first person in human history to ever step foot on an alien planet, your name would go down in textbooks for all of history. Like Christopher Columbus times 10. Also it may not be a complete one way trip. When they set out for mars theyd leave with the idea of never coming back, but the fact is our technology could grow exponentially and we could one day send a vehicle to bring them back... also history has shown us that many people dont care if there life is on the line, think about ancient explorers, many left with the idea that they will never return but they didn't care they just wanted to leave and experience the world and learn new things... so that is your answer its a great idea and would lack no volunteers, the only problem it would have is getting it started and the permission of a government... and if you'd like to learn more about it there's a private company planning on sending a group of four on a one way trip to mars in the next decade or 2... look them up if you want they are called "mars one"

We've sent tons of one way missions to Mars. One day we *want* a sample return mission. But those are difficult, and expensive. I assume though that you mean a *manned* one way trip.... Of course it's possible. Is it a good idea? No, it is one of the stupidest ideas imaginable. What would be the point? Just to see if you could send a person to their death? Even if you found a volunteer(s) willing to go they would have to be mentally unbalanced, or terminally ill at best. Not the best candidate for astronaut training. Even then public opinion would certainly not support the mission, aka no way of getting it funded.
