1983 Ford Ranger 2.3 litre, 4 cylinder engine?

I have a ford ranger- the firing order is 1-4-3-2. Compression, wires, plugs all new. If I have the wires on right the engine backfires and won't run, if I reverse #3 & #4 wires the engine runs but misses. Help, why is it doing this? Could it be the timing belt, how do I check if the belt has slipped? It has been parked for a few months.

Update:

The distributer cap is new. Also the rotor

Update 2:

The distributer cap is new. Also the rotor

The firing order is 1-3-4-2 on almost all inline 4 cylinder engines. It can't be 1-4-3-2 because pistons 1 and 4 rise and fall together as do 2 and 3, when 1 and 4 are at the top 2 and 3 are at bottom.

Wiring it as 1-4-3-2 would have cylinder 4 firing on the intake stroke with the intake valve open and cylinder 3 firing at the end of the power stoke with the exhaust valve open, both not good and both causing backfires.,

Could be a cracked distributor cap.
