Want to start getting into pedals?

I want to start using pedals more, I've never really been one for using pedals, I would just use the settings on my amp (Line 6 Spider III and a Line 6 Spider IV). I only would really use distortion and stuff, to get a basic sound. On guitar I play metalcore mostly, which is what my band is, with a bluesy twist sometimes, and sometimes a really dark feel to it. So what would be some good pedals for me? The guitar I use the most is a Schecter Hellraiser C-1, with active pickups. Would it be good to buy a foot switch too? To switch between channels on my amp. The amp has pretty good distortion and stuff, but the effects like delay and others aren't the greatest.

If you like the sound of the distortion on your amp then there is nothing wrong with using it. There are lots of great pedals out there, but to be honest, a good metal pedal is hard to find. The Metal and Insane settings on the Spider probably sound about as good as most analog metal pedals. Now if you were talking about blues or classic rock it would be an entirely different story.

One of the more popular metal distortion distortion pedals is the Boss Metal Zone. Any GC or similar store will have that pedal as well as Line 6 amps. So you could just take a trip to the store and try the two side by side. Run the Metal Zone through a Spider amp on the clean channel, then turn the pedal off and switch to one of the metal or insane settings.

For metal you could get by with just an analog delay like the MXR Carbon Copy. A reverb would be cool to have also, but you would be fine with just the delay. Generally I run reverb all of the time and just use delay on some leads. But the Carbon Copy would be great to use all of the time like reverb if adjusted properly. Sometime I think a little delay sounds better than reverb with really high gain. If you do get a reverb I'd highly recommend the TC Electronic Arena Reverb. This is what I use with my Mesa Rectifier and it kills.

Use analog pedals that create the exact tone, sound, boost, and functionality you are looking for rather than the super expensive digital pedals with all the banks and channels. For metal, a good compressor, 2-3 distortion pedals with high gain and scooping features, and a solid reverb or delay pedal would do the trick. In fact, for metal you can really just use the tone switch on your guitar with a DS-1 pedal and maybe a Big Muff with a delay pedal and go bonkers.
