How to become a doctor?

I've decided I want a career in medicine and I'm not sure what careers there are in it I can't find any info!? I've narrowed it down to either being an emergency doctor in A&E or cardiotharacic consultant but I'm not sure how to get there. I'm entering my college (sixth form) application in June so I was wondering what I need to do to get there. I'm guessing biology, chemistry and maths at A level, but what else do i need to do?

    1. Major in biology, chemistry, or the like.

    2. Make sure your classes match up with the requirements of medical colleges (every one is a bit different.) Basic requirements are 2 semesters of Organic Chem, psychology, physics, biochem., etc.

    3. Do field studies and undergraduate research while in college (you will have to ask your professor to work underneath him in a special project for undergrad research). Field studies are great, and usually are about half a semester's worth of class, then a trip somewhere for about a week. Some field studies are all summer, it really just depends on what program you're looking into, but a lot of universities offer their own science field studies. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS.

    4. Keep up your GPA, if you can't do college, you can't do medical school.

    5. Go shadow people, build up your resume/CV with tons of experience that is science related. Basically every summer, you have to be busy in something science-y. ALSO SO IMPORTANT.

    6. Study hard for the MCAT, write a good personal statement, practice your interview strategy (you will have professors help you with all of this your junior year). Bottom line, if you're a good student with good experience, you will get into medical school, don't worry about it too much.

    7. Choose your path in med. school, do you want to be a M.D. or D.O.? Also you specialization career will be thrown in here too (E.R. doc or cardiologist).

    8. Work under an established doctor for x amount of years after you graduate, then you can open your own practice.

Most of us make our career choices around the time we qualify, and you have plenty of time to decide what speciality you want to go in. Your priority now must be getting into medical school.

Biology chemistry and maths will be fine with, I thuink, every medical school, but I have linekd the Student Room page on A level requirements.

You'll need to do work experience and you 'll need a good personal statement and will have to sit the UKCAT, but best of luck!
