Current high-school students...?

I have a question about student teachers! I am one - I did my first practicum last year, and will do my last one next fall.

If you've ever had a student teacher teaching in your classroom, were they bad/good? What sort of things might they have changed to make them better? What is your idea of the perfect student teacher - i.e. a younger person who comes and teaches your class for a few weeks while your regular teacher is still in the room?

I feel student teachers do NOT get the full experience unless the regular teacher is NOT present within the room. Student are usually on their best behavior while the regular teacher is present; therefore, making the student teacher's job seem easy.

The best experience I had was substitute teaching (after my student teaching was over). You see the best/worst students and the experience is far more than you will ever learn in a credential class. I kept a notebook for 6-months of substitute teaching on the good and bad things I've learned from each classroom. When I finally received my own classroom, I applied all my notes to my own environment which made by first year easier.

Just a quick note (something they NEVER teacher you in credential classes). Your first two years are going to SUCK. Keep your head high and breathe, it will get better.

Personally, all the student teachers I've had were really bad. They assign twice as much work then the regular teacher. The student teacher was only teaching one of the three classes and the other two classes didn't even have as much work as us. We were expected to do so much work. And the tests, they were things that no one understood. For one test, literally the whole class got about 65% on there test.

My idea of a perfect ST is someone who actually teaches well and gives test that everyone understands. And actually puts some tome to making good notes.
