help with my Dogs swollen leg please?
I came to visit my grandparents and they have an ageing Belgian malinois. She has to be going on 11 or 12 years old. I came out to find the poor baby lying in the mud room with a very swollen leg. I bought her a bottle of dog aspirin and I am currently asking them to take her to the vet. But it’s a fight I’m losing. she has stopped moving around, but she does try to get up (sometimes) and yesterday she made it to the yard but she laid down and couldn’t get back up, but when it started raining I had to take her back in the house in a blanket (like a hammock) and I don’t think she liked that very much.
I can’t find any wounds, bug bites, splinters or anything like that, I think that she has arthritis and maybe hip dysplasia, and it’s the first joint from the foot on her back end. I think it’s the joint it’s self that is swollen. I have tried a heat pillow but she really hates anything touching her leg
If I can’t get them to take her to the vet what else can I do for her? What can I do to keep her comfortable and get the swelling down until I have the money to take her to the vet?
I got here about 4 days ago, in that time she has gotten worse. She’s still eating and drinking, but she can’t always get up to go outside to potty. Now she won’t even try without whimpering. I want them to take her now but they keep telling me that there not putting that much money out on an old dog that will die in a few years anyway and I won’t have enough money for a few weeks
thanks for the answers guys, and the rescue page. we tried the towl thing so that she could move around, she was ok with it a little bit but i dont think shes in any hurry to try it again.
i'm taking some of your advice and calling around for a vet that will let me pay when i get my check .
when i find one i'm taking her to the vet.
thank you all for telling my that this is animal crulity like i didnt already know that.
the asprin has helped and she has gotten up and walked around a little bit, but i'm still going to see what i can do about a vet visit.

I am really sorry to hear about your dogs condition. The aspirin was a good idea. I think you should be able to give her about 80 Mg twice a day. I would have to advise you to take her in to the vet. An office visit shouldn't cost more than $40.00 or so for just an exam. If you don't have the money now, call the vet, explain your situation and ask if they can make an arraignment for payment later,
You could also call the local humane society or SPCA.
You might also try a breed rescue.

In any case, please take your girl to the vet as soon as possible. She is getting on in years, but I bet your grandparents are too. Just because the subject is old is NO reason to let them suffer. If you really can't come up with finances, call around and see if you can find help. Sorry I didn't have a better answer for you. Please don't give up. Your dog is counting on you.

I realize you are trying to help - but its important to put this in perspective. It is illegal in the USA to refuse treatment for a dog. If reported, your grandparents could face charges.
The dog's leg could be fractured or broken and /or a systemic infection - its downright cruel to keep this dog in this degree of pain. At minimum, your grandparents should take the dog into the vet and have it PTS if they refuse to treat it.
I really cannot for the life of me understand ANYONE who could wilfully ignore an animal suffering - and its sickening.
Add: YEs, I guess your grandparents could be let off the hook if a rescue for Malinois is in the area - they may come and pick up the dog - but they sure as heck won't give it back.
You should NOT self medicate.
If I saw this dog and knew the situation - I would most certainly report your grandparents to the authorities - you might want to mention that to them .

Her quality of life is the issue here. She really needs to go to the vet. If it is arthritis and hip dysplasia, the vet will be able to prescribe some anti-inflammatories and/or other pain medications to make her feel better and be more comfortable. Placing a towel under her belly to help lift her up so she can walk is a great idea, but if she is in pain, she's not going to like that. There's really nothing else other than a vet visit that will help her.

It sounds like her hip or another joint in her leg is out of place. This could have been easily fixed if they had taken her in, but now she will need surgery to fix it. That is if she has a displaced joint.
Either way, she needs to be seen by a vet. This is animal cruelty. They know that their dog is in pain and they won't do anything about it. That is animal cruelty and neglect.
You can call your local animal control to come and take the dog. Your grandparents won't like it very much, but it will be better for the dog.

If the swelling is that low, you're looking at a fracture or a ruptured Achilles tendon, not dysplasia.
What they are doing is considered NEGLECT and is ILLEGAL.
If they refuse/can't afford proper treatment, then they should call animal control or take her to a municipal shelter to be humanely euthanized.
But first, contact the closest of these people: http://www.malinoisrescue.org/contacts.shtml and see if they can help. Malinois rescue is pretty organized and pretty active and will help if they can - even if that "help" is just being the one to pick the dog and have them euthanized.

X-rays to rule out dislocation. If not dislocated or broken, then I'd try a doggie chiropractor. It is considered animal cruelty in most states not to get an animal medical care.
Maybe they would sign the dog off to a local ASPCA. It would get treatment and a new home where the owners care in a better way.

Old age is really playing havoc on her body. It could be water retention (oedema-SP?) , it could be severe joint swelling from arthritis, anything, but unfortunately she really needs a vet. Ask them how can they just let her suffer in pain like that. I doubt that you really can do much to help her. Sorry they are so stubborn about this.
