So say in the future we've managed to land on another planet, interesting scenario?

So in the future we have FINALLY ventured off to another planet, let's say the recently 'discovered' ones on the news as of late. And there's humanoid, some kind of alien life on there like us. Just think of Star Trek/Avatar or whatever.

So after figuring communications out with each other, say the whole religious subject comes into play with some of them. And come to find out, they have religions themselves, and they have atheists as well. Only thing is their 'bible' is different, pertaining to their planet obviously, and maybe even their God is perceived differently.

So how would some of you radical christian folks take such an interaction in the event it happens? How would radical atheists perceive this, given you blame a book for the massive amounts of death and destruction and devise that if religion never existed the world would be more 'sane'. Yet in some other planet THE SAME happenings occured elsewhere? (I use the word radical because there are folks who take their religion, or lack thereof to the extreme...full of bias, and contempt for those who disagree)

Granted the whole Star Trek concept has been overplayed all the time in novels and movies, but on a serious 'what if' note, because such a thing as 'planet travel' is NOT impossible, and i'm pretty sure there will still be plenty of christians and atheists running around if and when that event occurs, so how would you imagine (yes imagine please, I know it's difficult given the need to play the part, but give it a try) taking in such information revealed?

Update:

@Alexis De tocqueville: Not exactly what I was asking, looks like a good read though, although it favors an atheist's perspective. However I can see the correlation.

@JoeP222: Who's to say it cannot? Surely if we can have a space station outside the planet, and have completed the ability to creat flying aircraft, why is traveling to another planet an impossibility? OR the idea that other humanoids would have a civilization with the concept of theism and atheism? Either way, while my question relies on imagination, yes any answer would suffice..sooooo what's your answer?

@Blue girl in a Red State: YOU may not blame the book for atrocities, others (of those i've called 'radicals') have. And while I appreciate your answer, because I believe yes the radical christians or other religions would go to extremes at converting even aliens, unless those christians took over THIS planet, the likelihood of them committing genocide on another planet is unlikely if tha

There is nothing surprising in the scenario you describe. Alien races would have religions at some point in their development. I'm sure the need to explain is an integral part of being an intelligent species.

We don't have to go to another planet to see this. We find religious beliefs in every remote and isolated corner of the world. We have even seen religions appear spontaneously, such as the Melanesian cargo cults.

Interesting question. Taking the part about Prophets first. (Jesus, Mohammed etc.,) then neither Christians or Muslims should have a problem. Mohammed said he was a prophet for all of 'man'kind, and Jesus said he was a prophet come to minister to the Jews. There was no comment about other worlds. Islam teaches that all people have had their messengers (prophet) so presumably the inhabitants of another world have had theirs too. How God decides to have himself interpreted in various places is his business.

I cannot comment on the Jewish faith, but I'll bet a dollar to a kick up the backside that it looks the same!

Remember the story about the religious girl who said there was no such thing as Dinosaurs, because her religious writings didn't mention them? This alien world religion is just the same situation, but maybe from the other perspective. Just because its different doesn't mean to say its wrong.

However, we can expect the fanatics to rubbish any attempt at logical thinking, as they usually do. Easier to quote dogma than to work it out.

  • For one thing, I don't "blame a book" or have ever blamed a book for the atrocities people do. "Evil" people would still be "evil", even without some book telling them that it's okay.

Second, just look at our history, and what the Christian missionaries & conquerers did to the new native populations they found. What makes you think that any species on an alien planet wouldn't suffer the same fate from the fundie proselytizers as did the natives of years past?

I call the city Elleville, and quite of having a baseball franchise, I start up a baseball league for women. it is going to likely be talked approximately as the well-liked All-American women professional Baseball League. My action picture star alien would be Dotty Henson.

Given that many religions and spiritual communities on Earth don't subscribe to my views I wouldn't view it as any different from that ... unless it was threatening my freedom or liberty why would I care what they thought ... even if I found it absurd ... ? Might be good for a few lulz though ... new material is hard to come by :)

Since your scenario is not going to happen and only exists in imagination, any answer given will suffice, since it is just a fantasy.

    Interesting.

So you think there would be theists and atheists in other planets too?

As far as we know, this is the only planet in rebellion against God. You will have to wait for the confirmation, however.

There's a science fiction story written about this.
