just adopted a 3 year old dog... how to potty train?
me and my husband just adopted a 3 year old puggle (pug beagle mix) and I work ten hour days and my husband works nine... we let him out before the last person leaves, and then i come home on my break and let him out and then the first person home lets him out, but almost everyday we come home to poop and or pee in the house... when we first got him we had a few but overall went both outside and now... two weeks later, he refuses to poop outside, but he will pee... and we come home to accident all the time..... any suggestions?
a nine hour work day is normal... eight hours with a one hour break... and i did mention that i came home on my break to let the dog out... i spend about 45 minutes at home before i leave again

You need to buy a crate and crate train him. He's likely pooping out of anxiety, not just because he doesn't know better. He knows what you want, he's just too freaked out when you're gone to handle it.
So, give him a place that he feels safe and comfortable and that also encourages him to hold it until you get home. A crate is the first thing any dog owner should get, regardless of the dog's age. I got my Corgi from someone who got her from a breeder and she was never crated, but after many "anxiety" accidents, I crated her and now she loves it. She jumped right into it the very first day and has never been unhappy about being in it.
Put a nice soft blanket in the bottom of the crate, put some toys and chew bones in the crate with her and give her a treat when she's put inside the crate. Close the door when you're gone and leave it open when you're home, so she can come in and out of it when she pleases. It looks a little inhumane at first, but a lot of dogs really do love their crates once they get used to it.
Feed him first thing in the morning, almost as soon as you get up, so he has enough time for his body to tell him he needs to poop. Dogs typically want to poop after eating, as their body makes room for the new food being digested. Take him outside 15-20 minutes after he eats to play and potty for at least 20 minutes before putting him in the crate; he can be out in the house until the 2nd person leaves. When you get home, calmly let him out of the crate and take him outside to play for another 20 minutes to work out the energy he may have accumulated before you put him back in the crate. Do NOT feed him during your break, but allow him to drink some water if he wants to. When you get home from work, do the same thing, but feed him dinner when he gets back inside from his play/potty time. Take him out again 30 minutes after that for the last play/potty session of the night.
If he makes it through the night without accidents, he doesn't need to sleep in the crate, but if he potties while you're sleeping, that's where he needs to go at night, too. After he gets used to the crate, you'll find that he's much happier, poops outside reliably, and your house will be so much cleaner!

What kind of shelter would adopt out a dog to people who work 9-10 hours? Your problem is bigger than potty training. Your dog will become destructive without enough attention or exercise. And it's not possible to potty train a dog if your never home.
Edit: me and my boyfriend both work 9 hours with an hour break. He's only home alone for 3 hours at a time. It's ok, you'll see soon enough that I'm right.
