Ideas for a "magic" Wedding?
I have been brainstorming wedding ideas and I came up with a magic theme. Here's the catch: I do not want to be cheesy about it. We're not talking disney magic or magic tricks. Think... Eating hall from the Harry Potter movies.
I am trying to think... How can I execute this idea and maintain elegance and tradition?
One thing that comes to mind is perhaps candles floating on water, but the problem would be the water. It would take away from the enchanted "magical" look. I'd rather find a way to use thin, clear wire to make objects look like they're floating.
Another idea I had (along the lines of floating objects) would be to have the altar look as though it were floating above our heads.
Again, I'd really like to stay away from disney/cartoony magic. No blue and purple poofs of whatever. I want to think.. an enchanted wedding.
Lastly, I honestly think themed weddings are superficial and take away from the experience/dilute the portrayal of the bond between those getting married. THIS theme, however, fits perfectly with my relationship. We met on a video game (and no, we're not the weird, unattractive kind of gamers) and being 18, we never thought we could make it work, especially considering we lived states away and worked crappy part time jobs.
I don't know if it was love, God, or magic, but something brought us together as if we were meant to be. As impossible as it seemed, it still happened. Every dream we had is coming true before our eyes every day. We're so thankful for what has happened and we want our wedding to reflect our journey.

For your floating candles, you can have a bowl with half water and half clear oil that floats (like mineral/baby oil) then use food coloring (color to match your theme? Or blue...) Make sure its water based food coloring and it should only color the water at the bottom. Then have floating tea candles which should float over the oil. Tada! Illusion of floating candles without the wires!! And for the alter, I imagin floating curtains, nothing with rods or posts or columns, hanging from the ceiling.
If you line the banquet hall with sheer curtains and then have those "twinkling" xmas lights behind them, then it should look like a starry night! Make sure the wires look hidden. Either match it with the curtains or match with the backdrop walls.
I also imagine the processional music being light and airy played on a harp. Very elegant and fairy-like sounds.
I'm sure you can google something on magical themed weddings/parties to get ideas.

The theme of a wedding is two people pledging their eternal love for one another before family and friends. So I agree with you there. I think less is more as far as applying your little touches of magic. I actually think candles floating in the water would look cool, and if the lights are going to be low for dinner, it will look magical.

Use clear fishing line to hang anything. It's virtually invisible in air.
I would also put twinkling lights anywhere I could. http://www.illuminatedgarden.com/fairy-berries-set...
And as many candles as possible. I'm talking several hundred to make it look like the Great Hall.
