Horrible recurring nightmares...?

Over the past two weeks I've had about 3 hours of sleep a night because every time I fall asleep I wake up in near hysterics. I'm so tired and I can't function any more. I'm forgetful, I can barely think and I'm constantly slipping into a half asleep stupor. I've tried relaxation techniques, herbal teas and positive thinking but I'm still plagued by the same images night after night. I really need some other cures before I go insane. Please help

You have slipped into a cycle of fear. You are afraid to sleep, therefore when you do, you have another nightmare. You have become over-anxious about the whole situation especially the lost sleep.

Firstly reassure yourself that, although unpleasant, losing a few hours sleep will not cause insanity even if it causes us to become quite tired and exhausted for a while.

Have a think about your waking life and see if there is anything concerning you unduly that could be causing ongoing nightmares. If there isn't, then all you have to do is to break the cycle of fear.

Make sure it isn't something you are eating or drinking before bed which makes things worse, and don't indulge in scary movies or books for the time being.

Make sure that you have enough air in your bedroom and that you are not too hot or cold in bed. Be prepared to waken up from a nightmare by leaving a nightlight burning. That helps an awful lot in those few seconds between sleeping and waking in a panic with your heart thumping.

Calm yourself by telling yourself firmly that this is, after all, just a dream, even if an unpleasant one. Allow yourself to become fully awake and then practice some even, slow breaths. As the nighmare fades, try not to become anxious or resentful about the fact that you have woken up yet again and that you are now missing sleep. Distract yourself with something quiet, like a book or movie (but again, not a scary one), until you feel sleepy again.

This will pass in time. Hope you are sleeping more peacefully again very soon.

That really sucks. :( I have a few suggestions:

    1. Try changing up your bedroom. Maybe there's something about the feng shui that's not sitting right with your subconscious. Sometimes people don't sleep well when stuff in their room is making them anxious. Make sure your bed is comfortable, there's not a mess around you, and there are no weird/scary posters on the wall. Even try putting up something calming. I have a dream catcher next to my bed, for example, and it's calming to go to sleep next to.

    2. Try figuring out the meaning behind your nightmares and what they symbolize to you. Maybe even go through a dream interpretation book. Once you understand yourself and your dreams better, you may be able to have more pleasant ones.

    3. Some people even try to achieve lucid dreaming, which is having complete control of your dreams. This takes a while to develop. I did this when I was younger and it really helped, but it's a whole process. Usually you start by writing down all your dreams, even the bad ones, and then progress towards making yourself aware you are dreaming. There are online resources for this.

    4. Probably something in your waking life is stressing you out. Try to identify what it is and see what you can do about it.

    5. I like a little aromatherapy before bed. Lavendar and chamomile usually help. They sell a really nice Sleep oil/lotion combo at Bath & Body Works.

I hope it gets better. I've had insomnia and nightmares before and it is soo hard to function.

This might sound stupid but whenever I can't sleep I think of happy thoughts and hope too forget about whatever is bothering me. You usually dream about whatever is the last thing on your mind. If anything go to a doctor, ask him/her about it. Maybe he'll provide some sleeping pills. But for staying awake during the day, I recommend a lot of caffeine and if you have any access to something like adderall or concerts.

I think you could have a problem in your "everyday life" and then in night your unconsciousness solving that problem.
