Repairing blanket straps?

It seems every winter, the sursingle blanket straps that cross under the belly, come unhooked and she steps on them and breaks them. Sigh...any good ideas on how to repair them or where to buy hardware for them? I can't seem to find anything anywhere to repair them and I HATE having to buy a new blanket every time this happens. As of course, it will slide sideways etc when it's only hooked in one spot.

Any ideas? Any online places that sell hardware (clips etc)? Places to order such things? Thanks for your help :)

Depending on the thickness of the blanket you can use a separate surcingle, but these are only really suitable for lighter weight rugs. With thicker rug they need to be looser so will have a tendency to slide. Solution: add loops on your rug to prevent the surcingle from sliding backwards and forwards. A heavy duty surcingle will be better, however this won't stop the rug from sliding sideways.

So plan B. Attach different hardware, using buckles will make it far more secure and less likely to come unhooked, but they are harder to remove quickly in an emergency which is why the traditional hooks are so common.

Plan C. New hardware, but this time a clip. Just like your standard lead rope clip. Add the clip to one side and a ring to the other. The only way this would detach on its own is if one of the straps broke.

Another idea to try but a little more complex, is to add the cross over straps to the back of the blanket, going between the horses hind legs. Most of the time these types of straps are made of some strong elastic and a clip, with the rings on the blanket. Then a simple surcingle is used around the tummy. Personally I find rugs are less likely to slide with these types of straps than cross belly straps.

Some tack stores have repair shops. Also, smartpak and dover sell surcingles on the websites. They have these rubber rings that you slide on the surcingle so they dont come off.
