El Nino is the event in which the waters of the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean become warmer than normal for a period of time, while La Nina is the opposite, with the waters in that area turning cooler than normal. This in turn affects weather patterns.

El Niño-an unusually warm ocean current, accompanied by heavy rains and flooding.

La Niña-weather phenomenon that includes unusually cold ocean temperatures that push warm surface water farther west than usual, creating the opposite effects of El Niño—drought where El Niño brought floods and floods where El Niño brought drought)
