What to do to prepare for pregnancy?

My husband and I are getting ready to have a baby. What things should I do to be physically ready to have a child? Foods to eat/not eat, best weight or bmi to be at pre baby, anything like that.

You'll want to take prenatal vitamins with folic acid to prevent birth defects. Ideally, your BMI would be between 18 and 25. It also helps to do some exercises: personally I suggest walking once or twice a day, perhaps for 30 minutes at a time if you have the time. You'll want to avoid certain kinds of fish -- large fish that have been exposed to mercury. There are lists online. I also suggest that you bond with your husband as much as possible pre-baby: you want him to know that he's important to you, that your goal is to help him be happy, not just to have a baby. You might want to read "What to Expect When You're Expecting" -- it's got lots of great advice.

You should also consider financially preparing to have a baby. If you're in America, you would want health insurance with maternity coverage. If you work, you'll want to figure out how much money you'll need to live on one income when the baby's born, or you'll want a job with maternity leave. If you plan to go back to work, you'll want to find a place you trust for child care. It also helps a lot to have an emergency fund of about $1,000, and to have at least three months of expenses -- insurance, rent or mortgage, basic bills -- in the bank. That covers you in case your husband loses his job at a critical time.

It's great that you're preparing. You've also done one of the most important things: to marry first. Every study shows that children are more likely to be successful if parents are married. Thank you for being responsible.
