Car not starting in cooler weather?

Hi everyone,

My car usually won't start in slightly cool weather like 10-15 degrees celcius or 50-55F. So it's not very cold but my car starts fine once it's warm later in the day, and will not start in the mornings or night when it's colder. I will turn the key and it tries to start, it just keeps going for 30 seconds until the battery actually goes flat. Do you think I just need a new battery? I don't want to waste money on one if it won't help, because it starts absolutely fine in warmer weather... or should I take it to a mechanic? It's an old car, 1990 toyota corolla sedan. Has not been serviced or anything like that for 20+ years!!

Update:

can't afford to get it serviced and all of that. Can barely afford a new battery thats why I'm asking..

the previous answers are all incorrect. a battery is not going to make it start quicker. you don't need to take it to a dealership to get quality service, and your 1990 does not have a "choke". it is fuel injected and the fuel is computer controlled.

if you wanna find out what's causing it to not start in cooler weather, unfortunately a mechanic will have to look at it. no one here can properly diagnose it without physically touching the car. we can only suggest parts to start replacing based on symptoms.

based on your symptoms, you are having issues first thing in the morning, when there is a lot of humidity in the air. might be a secondary ignition concern. if this vehicle has a cap and rotor, there might be excessive corrosion on the ignition terminals, causing a lack of spark.

if it's because it's sitting overnight, it might be losing it's fuel pressure prime, and takes awhile to build fuel pressure sufficient enough to pass through the injectors.

there might be trouble codes stored in the computer that a technician could retrieve and help isolate the concern without spending hundreds of dollars on guesses, and "what if's"

You let the cat out of the bag lady! What do you expect when the poor car hasn't seen the inside of a Toyota Dealership in 20+ years! A mechanical device deserves one heck of a lot more TLC than you have shown.

The poor old girl needs an electrical tune-up, the cooling system drained flushed and CLEANED, the oil and filter changed, the brake fluid changed, the automatic transmission fluid and filter changed, the battery should be load tested, the charging system tested and YOU DON'T WANT TO WASTE ANY MONEY.

If you've never spent any money on maintenance and repairs, now you will learn what you've been missing.

PS. With all do respect to the first rotund non-mechanic who answered your question: More batteries fail in hot weather than below 32 Fahrenheit.

Yes cold weather is where a weak battery fails.

edit. with all due respect, batteries generate electricity through a chemical reaction. As we all know from grade 7 science chemical reactions slow down in colder weather. This is why weak batteries fail to start on that first cold morning and may work fine throughout the day. Batteries have a definite life span of charge discharge cycles. I do agree that extreme heat is one factor that shortens a batterys lifespan, along with vibration, and deep discharge cycles.

Hi, the problem is your choke, it is failing, you should take it to a mechanic, tell him the choke is not working. Do not waste money on a battery.
