where did the idea of hell being the home of the devil and the demons come from?

hell is not the devil and demon's home - it's his prison or execution chamber...

All those cartoons depicting demons running their business from hell give the false impression that they are happy to be there. They are not there yet (Rev 20:10) and they live in terror of the place (Mat 8:29).

so where did the idea of demons torturing people in hell originate?

Update:

yeah i was thinking around constantine or dante's inferno...

Pagan ideals mixed in with Christianity.

In centuries past most professed Christians have had very vivid ideas about who Satan is and what he looks like. He was an evil angel, they said, whom God had put in charge of the lake of fire to torment the wicked and he wore a red union suit and was equipped with horns, a tail and a pitchfork

In Egypt, Babylon, Persia and Greece he promoted the hellfire scare. The idea of a Devil with horns, tail and pitchfork for throwing people into the fire came from Pluto, a god of the underworld in classic mythology, and from Pan, a Greek god. The mythical concept sidetracks people from the Devil’s real purpose.

Sweetie, it really is like this. not something that you've stated as Wicca is somewhat the middle of Wicca or is even solely Wiccan. as well because you quite do not pick to desert Christianity's god and also you're concerned that you will be punished for even "dabbling" in this stuff that are literally not somewhat Wiccan or specially pagan, my suggestion to you may be to position off the belongings you imagine receives you into worry with the in ordinary words god you somewhat pick to worship. That stated, Wicca is not merely pagan, that is a pagan faith and Wiccans worship different gods than the Christian god. if you're actually not keen to desert bible god and all Christian teachings about sin, guilt, punishment, and judgment then you won't be able to be something yet Christian. you in ordinary words won't be able to.

You could read the encyclopedia Americana, and the Egyptian " book of the dead". That helped influenced hell fire.

satan and his demons can't burn in hellfire b/c it doesn't exist. They mislead the world into believing that false doctrine. John 8:44, Rev. 12:9,12

Emperor Constantine probably when he established the catholic church - also the demonic visions of "mary" scared little girls with visions of the common but false concept of hell and this non-biblical purgatory.

The idolistic/satanic versions of the bible such as the catholic version were used to control the masses with fear and to make them spend money

IDK.....I suppose from ignorance of God's word. The devil is not in hell...he is here on earth. One day he will be thrown into the lake of fire, but that has not happened yet
