Should Jews be allowed to treat women like second class citizens?

It just doesn't seem right.

Update:

I'm referring specifically to the situation with the bus in Brooklyn - read the article before responding.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/20/nyregion/bus-seg...

Update 2:

It's a private bus, but it was awarded a public contract.

Update 3:

So if they wanted blacks to sit at the back of the bus, this would be alright. Hmmm... I don't think so. This situation is being reviewed by the Transportation Authority. I predict that the private bus company will be forced to comply with non-discrimination law or they will have to cede the contract to the next bidder.

It is a private bus company operated by the Hasidic community, an ultra-orthodox sect of Judaism.

The U.S. Constitution guarantees people the right to practice their particular religion without intereference.

If the Hasidic women don't object, it is no one else's business. If an individual woman objects, they can leave the Hasidic sect.

So, whether non-Hasidic people disagree is irrelevant.

EDIT: The comparison with the plight of blacks is not relevant. The blacks had NO alternative. The Hasidic woman CAN choose to not ride the bus or to leave the sect altogether.

The ball is in the city's court. They can revoke the bus company's license. If they do, I would imagine that the Hasidic community will continue to operate the bus and will do so according to its traditions.

But, as I wrote earlier, the traditions of a community are their business, not mine or anyone else's.

You're being disingenuous when you say "Jews."

You're talking about an ultra-Orthodox sect for whom the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries never really happened. There are tons of backwards things they do.

The other 90% of Jews see things differently. If you actually knew some Jews, you'd understand that, too.
