elephant behavior question?

Hey, Yahoo community. I was at a zoo on a day when the heat was in the triple digits. The elephant sprayed some teenage girls with water from its tank. The girls screamed and ran. The elephant ignored me. I waited until later to laugh so I wouldn't make the girls mad. He never moved his ears, stared, charged or made a sound. I assume he wasn't being aggressive. Is there any of knowing whether he was playing a joke or trying to be helpful and cool off the girls on a hot day? I e-mailed the zoo but they didn't answer. I can understand that because animal care is job one.

The situation you describe sounds very comical. Since there were no other signs of aggression, the elephant was probably not antagonized or provoked. He ore she was probably being playful. However, elephants are highly intelligent. So there is a slight possibility that he or she understood that they were hot and was maybe cooling them off. But elephants, especially Asian elephants, love water.
