Prince Charles who receives annually (last two years) approximately f 16.5 million plus grants towards the cost of running his office, etc. equaling around f 18million from proceeds from the Duchy of Cornwall//of which he oversees all as chairman of the Princes Council,----- does not have a "real as you would think say policeman, dentist, brick mason, etc." job other than being a patron of or raising funds for his charities founded under the Prince's Trust, the largest multi-cause charitable venture in the UK (ranging from disadvantaged young people to environmental issues such as destruction of natural rain forests)----however, overseeing/chairing the council that does oversee the management and running of the the Duchy of Cornwall one of two royal duchies is awarded to the heir to the throne at birth. Established by Edward III for his son, consists of two parts the title and honour and the landed estate that supports it.

The duchy is made up of 133,658 acres or 54,090 hectares over 23 counties in Devon, Cornwall, Herefordshire, Somerset and Wales. It manages the land and property and has a financial investment portfolio. It is managed in five geographical districts: London=commercial property and the Kennington Estate Eastern=Estates in Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire,Gloucestershire, Hereford

Western=Estates in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly---with satellite offices on Dartmoor and at Poundbury ---- Managed by the Prince's Council, chaired by the Prince of Wales who maintains a long term stewardship approach actively involved in improving the duchy and passing it on stronger and better.

He also makes state visits (the highest form of diplomatic contact between two countries) to other countries on behalf of the UK for reasons of diplomatic prestige, investment and economic activity. He is a well known philanthropist, encouraging interests in the environment, education and the arts.

So, to answer, his job is public relations which some people do not call a job and that is a personal choice, shaking hands, doing the do, speeches over and over and over and the hands on management/involvement with maintaining the duchy of Cornwall and continuing to see it grow and thrive.

However, that is not to say he is not a very wealthy man owning environmental food company "Duchy Originals, founded in 1990 earning a profit of f2.25 million which f625,293 was donated to charity. Also, he sold property and land for total price around f43 million thus making his net worth around f210 million.

Please excuse my use of the f, I do not have the pound sterling mark on my keypad. I must admit that before I started this research/whatever googling I thought all he did was shake hands and receive income from the duchy, but after just what I have found and will look further (love this stuff) the duchy is gigantic, spread all over whatever, this and that, big farms, little farms, etc. ----- just seeing to all that and that means taking care of the people who live and work on it is job enough for anyone.

    Charles is mostly a farmer.

Well, the Duchy of Cornwall is mostly farms. So, he has to manage all the farms, and the tenant farmers. He is a huge land owner, and he is responsible for the land, and the people living on it. He has to take care of them, and make sure everything is fine - or, he get's no money.

Basically, he is a landlord, with all the responsibilities of any landlord, except instead of a building or two, he has farms, and villages, and so on.

And, by all accounts, he does it very well. I have been to England, in areas where he has his lands. You can tell a farm is part of the Duchy just by looking at it. The buildings are in great shape, and usually freshly painted. The grounds are well kept, and the farms orderly. And, from what I heard from the people who live there (mostly Dorset), they really like him. He takes very good care of his people.

In fact, the Duchy was Charles' only source of income. He did not draw money from any fund. He was expected to make his own way - if he couldn't run some farms, how could he run 16 countries? And, he not only did so, he did very well indeed.

Duchy Originals is one of his businesses, from the Duchy of Cornwall:

He is no layabout. He does the following:

    1. With a council runs the duchy of Cornwall.

    2. Patron/fundraiser of many many charities.

    3. Advocates addressing environmental concerns.

    4. Has set up trusts and programs to help underprivileged children at risk.

    5. Represents his mother and country at official ceremonies and state visits especially out of country ones.

    6. and so many more.

    He's not lazy.

As Robert has said he does quite a lot as well as owning quite a few farms which gives him some money. Americans think royalty does nothing but sit on there ar*** all day, but actually they do more than the average person does.
