Is there racism towards African American females in Mexico City? and is it safe?
I have an internship in Mexico City next month. I am extremely terrified not only because of race but also because of safety. I know that being African American, I will stick out, so I'm not sure on how I would be perceived by others.I know no one in the city. I have heard mix reviews about safety and racism. I don't know what I should think. :-s

Mexico is a very racist country, but racism here is different from racism in the USA. There is only one PC rule in Mexico - Mexican Indians must be called "indígenas" or indigenous people. Everyone else: black, white, yellow, fat, short, tall, skinny, cross-eyed, smelly, pimply, freckled, etc is exempt from PC treatment.
We have black Mexicans, but not many. Mexico City is quite cosmopolitan, but in some places in the city and most places away from the city people will stare at you; not because they hate you rather because you are exotic. Most Mexicans are fascinated with black people. Mestizo and Indigenous Mexican men are especially fascinated with black women.
As for safety - Mexico City is the safest big city in the country. Last year we had the lowest murder rate of any mega-city in the western hemisphere. Just use some street smarts and stay out of what are obviously bad neighborhoods - especially at night.
IGNORE anyone who tells you to not dress nicely or not to dress too attractively in Mexico City. People in Mexico City love to dress well, especially the women. And shorts and short skirts and dresses are popular.
Enjoy your stay in Mexico City. I hope you make some good friends.

sure you will stick out a bit, but not in a bad way. Racism is not really an issue in Mexico especially in Mexico City. If someone calls you Negrita there is not as a bad thing, it is a loving nickname. You will be equal to every other person who visits Mexico. I mean my girlfriend is Jewish and you would think in an overwhelmengly Catholic country that would be a problem, but she has seen 0 discrimination.
As for safety, most of the city is very safe with a few trouble spots like any big city.
Welcome to Mexico

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) could be the capital of Mexico and an incredible town surrounded by great pile ranges. To see that city you are able to pick the very best option hotelbye . The city's area is certainly breathtaking. Two superb snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower over it using their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also preserves numerous reminders of their past and these are things that attract the tourists. The whipping heart of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in fact the country's first constitution was proclaimed in 1813 and now could be one of the most visited place of Mexico City because it's one of the world's biggest squares. In Mexico City you may also visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

You know there are black Mexicans right? Yes, there are always certain ignorant people, like in US but we are far less racist that the US people.
I am from Mexico City, I love the place, Yes, there are a lot of robberies and certain express kidnappings just to get your money out of the cash machine. However, if you don´t go around the danger zones (Tepito for example) you should be fine. Don´t be alone let at night. Don´t wear flashy jewelry.
Enjoy, Mexico city is so amazing!

Mexico is NOT a racist country. There ia far less racism in Mexico than in the U.S. Mexico City is safe. You need to relax and look forward to your internship. You will find the Mexican people to be very courteous and friendly. You are not going to be in contact with drug dealers and they will have absolutely no interest in you. Smile a lot, be outgoing and friendly, and you will be very well received. There are over one million Americans living in Mexico, including blacks. We are fine here.

In the US some mexicans and some blacks are racist to each other but when you actually go and visit mexico, people there aren't racist and are very welcoming to foreigners, race isn't something mexicans are obsessed about.
