    1 / 8 + 1 / 5 = 1 / x

    (1 / 8 + 1 / 5)(40) = (1 / x)(40)

    (40 / 8 + 40 / 5) = (40 / x)

    (5 + 8) = (40 / x)

    (13) = (40 / x)

    x = (40 / 13)

    x = 3.08 hours

    The homeowner paints 1/8 of the house in a day and the pro paints 1/5 of the house in a day.

    To make them like fractions the homeowner paints 5/40 of the house in a day and the pro 8/40 of a house in a day.

    Therefore together in a day they could paint 13/40 of a house in a day.

    This makes 3 days of painting by both 39/40 of the house is complete, therefore a little over 3 days to finish the house.

    So in 4 days they could complete the house together.
