What purpose is Guantanamo serving?
We have maximum security facilities and a functional criminal justice system. What is wrong with letting either our system or the international court actually give these people a trial, let the innocent ones go home? Don't delude yourself, there are innocent people being detained at Gitmo, a few very unlucky ones for more than a decade. If you've held someone for more than a decade, suffice it to say, you know every single damn thing about them, including if they are a terrorist.

None. At this point it's continued existence is doing more harm than good. More than half of the people there were approved for release 3 years ago but it's been indefinitely held up. There is more than enough space in existing federal prisons to house the remainder. Why the senate is blocking that is beyond me. These prisoners can't have any intelligence of value, not after all this time. And the argument that they would 'rejoin the fight' is frankly not a good reason for holding someone indefinitely.

It's more along the lines of the safety for those in Gitmo, if they were in a max security prison in the US they would not last long when the inmates of the US maximum Security Prisons are Rapists, Murderers, or other high risk persons who would love to just kill one of the Gitmo inmates. Gitmo is set to detain those accused of acts of terrorism (a touchy subject with US citizens). Inmates who are Murderers that find out about a child molester or someone who killed women or children or where accused of these acts usually end up killing them.

I think I just heard Obama on radio saying his plan is going
to close it soon. It was too luxurious anyway for terrorists being
held there. Let's send them to a crowded prison where they
don't allow prayers to Allah daily like Gitmo allows. Let them
exercise with people of other or no other faith.
