Google Chrome web programming question?

I'm using version 26 of Google chrome and when I program a javascript alert box I just get a msg box that says javascript. none of my information I put in the box is there. for example:

alert(' This is some information');

The info doesn't appear. All other browsers perform correctly. Can someone tell me what's wrong?

Thanks

Update:

Well Java has no relation to javascript except the name is similar. Javascript interpreter is built into each browser and they can choose how they will implement it.
