Leaking hot water heater. Replace or repair?

It is leaking from the top of the unit. It is a 50 gallon G.E. gas unit. Built April of 2009. Any ideas as to what is causing the leak?

Most likely the original installer used teflon tape in the threads. Not smart. If you are able to get a good pipe wrench on the leaking nipple WITHOUT BREAKING IT you may be able to get the leak sealed by using an extremely high quality pipe thread compound like RectorSeal #5 or even #21.

Use a new nipple or flex tube...

Most times a leaking HWH is the kiss of death for the unit.....
