How does a taxi driver that leases a cab make money?

For example if the driver has to pay $70.00 a day to the company that he is leasing the cab from does that mean that everything over $70 on his meter machine he keeps? Plus tips?

Hi he works long hours and does all sorts of journeys sometimes he makes and some times he loses.

but for some one without skills it does give him a living of sorts usually a single person or one with a wife who works.

Basically, the driver earns fares and tips from the customers he picks up and drops off. He pays the lease whenever it's due out of that money, and he keeps the difference for himself.

Source(s): My dad would gladly own his own cab, but here in Chicago, you need a medallion (city-regulated taxi license), which costs upwards of $100,000. Which is why he leases.
