In the 50's we were told that Texas could succeed from the union if it wanted. Why has this changed?

Lots of things were "true" in the '50s changed. I've heard that as well, though. Texas joined once prior to the Civil War when it was a separate sovereign Republic. That status probably gave it some unusual rights, since every other state was either a territory or one of the original colonies. When it left to join the Confederacy then rejoined upon losing, its status, as well as the whole philosophical framework behind the Union, changed and any preferential provisions Texas may or may not have had prior to the Civil War would have been lost.
The practical reality of the situation is this: Texas has one of the few economies that generates as much revenue for the Federal government as it gets, despite its large size, extensive rural areas, and relatively low average education level. We provide oil, natural gas, shipyards, a large population base for military recruiting, agriculture, and several major defense contractors. If Texas were to secede, you can bet the powers that be will work hard to ensure it's brought back into the fold. All in all, it would not be a pleasant experience for anyone.

states had the the right to leave the union since day one, read many of the original state constitutions they said they could secede if necessary. Furthermore, what is a union? isn't a union voluntary? Like a marriage, its ok to get a divorce if things dont work out, instead the federal gov't was like an abusive husband who beats his wife (the states) for saying shes is going to leave him then shes scared to leave because shes been beaten and abused and then the husband (the fed) says ohh I saved the marriage (the union) but not really you just forced her against her will by threat of violence

at the beginning - to badmotherrucker; i think of in case you will take it slow and seek the internet for somewhat you will discover that whether Texas have been to would desire to "supply decrease back each little thing that the yankee tax payer paid for"; economically we've an exceedingly great variety of employer/producers/etc based regionally and would desire to conceivably exist on our own. as far as defense force is going; i'm unsure that Texas would have something to fret approximately. we actually fulfill particularly some government contracts for the defense force that i'm particular would desire to be smart (Lockheed Martin, TexasInstruments, Aerotek, EDS, etc) And would the NFL be what that's immediately if idiots like Jerry Jones did no longer spend hundreds of thousands on precise of hundreds of thousands to feed the sport? ;-) To CL, why would you assume that seceding from the U. S. would exchange something with reference to the way unlawful immigration works? "each and all the unlawful immigrants would in all hazard bypass there first as a results of fact it may well be much less confusing to get in there" - sure, in reality - geographically that's a TON much less confusing to get to Texas from Mexico than that's different places on condition that's a border state. yet while Texas have been to secede it may well be its own entity, no longer section of Mexico and for this reason it might would desire to control its borders in simple terms because it does immediately (if not greater diligently). in case you stop and picture approximately it, if Texas have been to do in simple terms that - it might actually place a barrier between unlawful immigrant circulate into the U. S.; or a minimum of shift it to different states with smaller shared borders that would desire to be controlled somewhat much less confusing. All that being mentioned, i believe Keith and common sense have the terrific suited of it. i think of it replaced into of course a fact made in passing to rigidity the incontrovertible fact that individuals have become uninterested with the federal government's involvement in employer and state/community governments while our own money and sovereignty is on the line. Is it Texas' good? sure. Is it the terrific answer? I doubt all people would agree one hundred% to that. particularly, seceding from the U. S. would desire to place Texas precisely the place Cuba has been for the previous countless an prolonged time and no person needs to bypass backwards while not having finished justification. Oh, yet while Texas does secede......all you "foreigners" can kiss your Tex-Mex nutrition, Dr.Peppers, and margaritas see you later ;-) j/ok

Nothing changed, you were just told something that wasn't true. Texas has no greater or lesser right to secede than any other state (see also, the US Civil War, when Texas actually did try to secede). In my opinion, no state has the (unilateral) right to secede, but in any case, Texas has no special privileges in that regard.
