Stereo system disables headphones on HP Pavilion dv7?

Question

I don't know why, but for as long as I've had this computer, for some reason (quite frequently, and annoyingly) the stereo speakers will override my headphones, meaning all playback will only come through speakers, even though my computer recognizes that my headphones are plugged in. It's annoying as all hell, because so far the only way I've found to correct it is by restarting my computer. Volume control doesn't fix it; it won't let me use headphones at all, even when I set them as the primary audio device- I've tried just about everything and I'm getting incredibly pissed off by it. I have no idea what to do. I can't use games, etc. with headphones anymore, because my computer will absolutely refuse to play sound through them- and it does the same thing with Skype; it absolutely will only allow feedback through the speakers on a call. HELP!!!

Creating Recovery Discs and or repair disk, Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive in(Windows 7). Just go to back and you can do it there.
