Would you say we have a problem with freedom of speech in the UK?

The so-called "snooper's charter" (recently dropped but soon to return)

People arrested over so-called "hate-speech" on facebook (I think burning poppies on rememberance day is foul but arresting people for words???)

Gagging orders which were basically decided between carter-ruck and a judge effectively bypassing our entire parliamentary law process allowing libel lawyers to dictate what can and cannot be reported by the press!

What do you think?

I think Orwell might be spinning in his grave.

...

Update:

And perversely, it's ok for hypocrites like the gay ex-cardinal Keith O'Brien to call homosexuals "perversions" and "detrimental" and all kinds of doom and gloom because they're gay.

We have way too much legislation on what people can and can't say - that's the problem, I believe.

...

Update 2:

Not at all, Cole Fan, all comments are welcomed.

Thanks for sharing your feelings on the matter.

...

Update 3:

True dat, Dreamstuff.

And it's largely due to one extremely clever and lucrative law firm who played the country's legal system for a total pigeon.

Your libel laws are ridiculous; they can be used to silence legitimate criticism.

Well said. Since when did people start taking FaceBook seriously? And why are they so silly as to post exactly who they are knowing full well bosses look at it, presumably all your greatest enemies look at it and now the legal departments look at it? I just don't get it.

And the legal people have started to consider it publishing your work, when most just consider it conversation. The practical effects of this approach is that people can't freely have a conversation on the Internet

As for the Gagging orders that really is making up rules for the rich

As for the hate speech coming from the religious, they have always had a licence to do that, apparently it's acceptable because it's religious, and we must tolerate the religious at all costs

I'll add that so many would rather cheat their way through life, if that were possible for more than a tiny minority. So freedom of speech means nothing to many people. They don't act on truth from anyone to the benefit of society (the purpose of the concept of free speech) and don't want to tell truths.

So you agree with verbally attacking and bullying people do you?

How do you justify that when so many children commit suicide each year because of it?

Freedom of speech does not defeat people's human rights to live in peace without fear of persecution!

Do you support the National Front and those sort of organisations as well?!

Yes, I do. Well, I'm not from the UK, but my fiance's family is there, so I've got ties.

Maybe my answer doesn't mean as much, but politicians are constantly telling people that they are too weak to have freedoms. That, of course, means the "victims" of "hate-speech". Apparently, people in the minority need to be protected from evil things like freedom of speech. I feel like I'm walking on eggshells there.

Orwell issued a warning, but instead the government interpreted it as a play book.

    Same for V for Vendetta.

You guys banned Michael Savages (American talk show host) book for being to right wing.

I can't think of any instance where I'd ban a book for political or religious reasons. And I'm a fundie.

I tend to agree with a lot of what you say

It's hard to judge because to anyone outside the UK, y'all's speech sounds like "phwoar, phoar, PHWOAR-phwoar...." so no-one can tell what y'all are saying anyway....

    I kid!! I kid!!
