I know Cris Burden did this in the 70's but I think a great piece of performance art is waiting for me.?
In the mid 70's had himself shot with a single .22 bullet. I love performance art and think it's time to go to another level. get shot 4 times with a .38 cal. bullet. I know alot of work goes into these pieces
and want to not only stay alive but stay conscious throughout and describe each bullets pain and feel
after each round. I was shot one time, but it was robbery not art,so I have an idea of what to expect. But what say you,it will be serious art for me about the transformative action of being shot but does
an artist ever have to explain his art?

I think a derivative performance of Burden's original could be a serious and interesting work. But why do you feel you have to go to “another level” By performing this as an appropriated act you are already changing it, especially in the context of recent gun violence in the US. I think upping the number and caliber you are getting away from your reference and only putting your self at greater risk.
And Yes artists have to be able to explain their work. You can be round-about and indirect, but should be capable of speaking to your actions.
There was an interesting short film that you might be interested in called "Delusions in Modern Primitivism" it is on vimeo. link below.
