Royal Mail - Recorded Delivery?

I recently sent a fairly small package by Royal Mail 1st Class Recorded Delivery and it cost £6.10p.

The counter assistant said if the parcel had been slightly smaller I'd have saved a few pounds, but as the parcel would not fit through their template letter box I had to pay extra.

I explained that a Recorded Delivery item isn't put through a letter box, it is handed to the recipient and it's signed for, so what has the letter box "penalty" got to do with it ?

The assistant was quite baffled and kept on saying it won't fit through the opening.

Seems to me Royal Mail are pulling a fast one here....your thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

I agree. Royal Mail is cutting its own throat with these new charges. They moan that the number of letters being posted has dropped but in recent years eBay must have increased the number of parcels sent so they must have made quite a bit on packets and parcels but now they're going on size rather than weight it's put me off selling bigger things on eBay. They've said it's because they're losing too much money on parcels but if you ask me I think it's plain old greed. I know there are other couriers but you have to mess about measuring all dimensions of your packet or parcel before you can get a price.

The template letter box is the one every Post Office has to assess whether your package is assessed as a large letter, small parcel or medium parcel. Ask to see it next time you are in a Post Office - or just look where the clerks are sitting and it's likely to be visible.

Go to Step Two of the price finder and it will give you sizes: http://www.royalmail.com/price-finder for small and medium parcels (and indeed large letters).

MyHermes provides a much cheaper alternative for anything over 1kg/over small parcel size.

When generating cookies, bake half the batch and scoop the remaining into ice-cube trays. When your current sweet tooth kicks in, pop out one and bake it to fulfill your craving without breaking the calorie bank.

Recorded delivery is put on a national data base, go to the post office and see what address it was sent to incase it was the wrong address, and you can also check the signature. sometimes you might recognise it or even read it

its a standard size limit . just like there are limits on weight . you used to pay by weight only but about 5 years ago they introduced size limits too . this is because a light parcel could be huge and take up a lot of space in a post van . its nothing to do with the sizes of letter boxes. its the size of the standard size gauges that they mean.

Skip ordering pizza and make one of these brilliant crusts at home: gluten-free nice potato crust, a quinoa tulsi crust that's also gluten no cost, or this low-carb cauliflower crusting.
