Your Thoughts on Mass Extinction?

250 million years ago, the majority of life on Earth was wiped out in something called "The Great Dying" or the permian triassic extinction. The cause has been unknown, my question is, what do you guys think caused this. Feel free to share some of your theories.

Update:

I won't choose a best answer for this one, I want you guys to vote on it. :)

It almost certainly wasn't due to an impact like the K-Pg since there's little evidence for impact c 252 MYA; furthermore studies have shown that extinction was gradual or stepped. Benton blamed Siberian trap volcanism, but admitted that equally great outpourings of lava at other times didn't cause similar levels of extinction. I think widespread extinction resulted from climatic changes associated with the formation of Pangaea. As the continents came together, much more of the earth's landmass became farther from the sea, the principal source of moisture, hence became more arid. A drier climate caused many plants to die out and for mass erosion to occur. Many animals starved for lack of sufficient productivity. Oxygen levels also declined due to less photosynthesizing plants. The fact that Lystrosaurus was abundant at the start of the Triassic, however, indicates that environmental degradation couldn't have been as universally bad as it was during the K-Pg. It is likely that new, dry adapted plants took over and Lystrosaurus and a few others lived off of these.

Btw Benton suggested the "methane burp" was due to global warming. It might have resulted from methane deposits being squeezed out as continents came together.

That was when around 90% of all species went extinct right? there are lots of theories, I think it must have had something to to with a drastic climate change in the oceans, seeing as the land animals weren't impacted as severely. A good reference to check out would be on itunesU they have a few lectures from the ROM from their Giants of Gondwana exhibit a little while back. The later lectures talk about dinosaurs mostly (awesome), but the earlier ones discuss plate tectonic theory and I think mention some possibilities for the causes of the Permian extinction.

The Triassic period ended 210m years ago with another mass extinction of sea creatures, and some land animals as well.

Some208 million years ago, another mass extinction took a toll primarily on sea creatures, but also some land animals.

Are humans causing the next mass extinction?

Solar Space clouds have entered earth and maybe for a short time as it pasted might of altered they content of the Air pressure and temps. causing and ice age and with plants already here started causing more green house gasses it started building the climate all over again. from planet starting to warm again Making rain. What was delivered to earth in those clouds are your guess Maybe You and i!

Without breathable Air on earth the Dino's probably just Fell over and were Flash frozen and died.

There are under sea Cities still being found today that have no known history. Even though our life's go on for 70 or more Years the time range compared to earths events might only be 1 second or far less ! Earth is in the billions of year old.

My thoughts are a meteor impact shattered the earth crust and allowed the basalt to flow out causing climate cooling and acidic conditions, this was also the time of the formation of Pangea which didn't help as large land masses do not have the tempering effects of oceans and seas

we are experiencing the mass extinction of independently questioning for ones self. maximum pick some to think of for them. did you comprehend the ice cap became into nonexistent 13,000 years in the past, and that top saline concentration through worldwide modern-day varieties had prevented ice formation for a jiffy interior the early 2000's? The magnetic field has flipped some 12000 circumstances that we can record. Storms getting worse isn't lots greater beneficial than human beings having an epiphany 2d. As an plane pilot and repair technician for heating and aircon kit for 35 years, and there is no longer something new or unusual happening. Extinction activities frequently correlate to the 30 million 3 hundred and sixty 5 days cycle of passing interior the path of the galactic airplane. there is too lots information to be defined right here, so i'm going to bypass away it at that. If there is yet another mass extinction of people right this moment (approximately 75,000 years in the past the eruption of Tambora decreased worldwide inhabitants all the way down to approximately 2400 human beings), it's going to be via the ideologists scaring all and sundry into ridiculous regulations that are unfavorable to foodstuff production, and a reliable society - i.e. making use of foodstuff flowers for bio-fuels and human beings inflicting societal discourse for his or her own political features. maximum do in comparison to what I say on the initiating, yet ultimately comprehend i'm appropriate - in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it hurts their thoughts so i'm vilified for what I say.

likely a massive amounts of volcanism pumping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

though some think it may be due to a meteor strike, or perhaps a combination of the two
