I have been a long time friend here of such a person, and consoling words, while perhaps cliche, do not bring them out of their grief rapidly. I've cried with the person, I've ached in the heartbreak, but will remain supportive and their friend. IDK if you know of this person, nor will I mention publicly, but the grip of death came rapidly and I cannot imagine being alone in that situation, or being the one who so loved the person, having to come to grips with the emptiness, the unrealized plans made, the promises that will never come to fruition. It's impossible for us in witness to do or be more, but be caring, loving, as comforting as we can be and walk with them through a very dark time.

Nothing. Just be there for them. When I lost a family member very close to me I didn't want to talk or anything. I just wanted to sit outside and let the wind blow in my face. I didn't want anyone's pity or cliche phrases, I just wanted the silence.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone but sometimes silence says the most.
