Simple, don't buy it, it's probably stolen or has a logbook loan on it.

No log book and service history shouldn't be a determining factor. Frankly, I'd consider that an added bonus. The previous owner could have done work themselves, or conversely faked entries in a log book. The best thing you can do is take the car to a mechanic before you buy it and for $50-100 have them inspect it to make sure you're not buying a lemon.

Well you have already stated you are buying it ! So its a little late to ask. If you are "thinking" of buying it then at least have someone with knowledge look at the car and drive it, do an HPI check without fail. Go to the sellers house, do not meet on a car park or motorway services, in fact do all the things you would do to satisfy yourself that all is above board and you are not buying stolen goods. You are advised by officialdom NOT to buy without a V5 document. That choice is your own but unless the deal is very good I would not risk it. Why not simply "fasten" the car with a deposit until the seller comes up with a duplicate V5 ? You are putting yourself into a corner and its not as though there are hardly any other Golfs out there :)

Rarely do you get a service history or log book with a car.

But any dealership can easily look it up for you.

There is no reason for concern or suspicion.

The mileage is reasonable for the year.

And it is not that hard for a mechanic to be able to verify.

Most people do not have their maintenance done at dealer, so a log book is pointless.

Most people throw it away as a waste of space.

All that would be in it is warranty work.

And any dealer can loook all that up for you.

no service history or log book sounds a little suspect. The mileage seems a little low for the year too. Unless you are sure of the seller I would give it a miss

Ask owner to get log book and only then concider buying it. No log book no sale !

    Walk away.

Do not touch it with a very large barge pole, it may be stolen, a ringer or a cut and shut, or it could still have finance outstanding on it, I smell a brown rodent with a long tail about this one.

Try watching on TV The Repo. Man.

Have it inspected by a mechanic before you buy it. Otherwise, best of luck...caveat emptor.
