Maybe the two people move to opposite ends of the country, or different countries, and the girl keeps seeing the guy's face everywhere, until she grows so despondent she shuts herself up in her room and gets dark circles under her eyes and over-eats herself into a premature heart attack.
Maybe one of them ends up with leukemia or some terminal disease, and the ill one dies in her/his beloved's arms, and something about the hospital music strikes the surviving one as the song he/she will always remember.
