have you ever been made to feel old and young at the same time?

Any teenager will tell you that that's the story of their life. Made to feel too young for somethings and too old for otherthings each day!

I feel that way each time I hear from my daughter.

I feel that way each spring the gulls, ducks, geese, robins, swallows and other song birds return to Alaska in spring.

And I feel that way each time I travel to be with my parents, still living and the eternal spark of my life!

Sure, there are some times I do not feel quite so spry, but that's life.

To be living, alive, grateful for the good and living through the not so good.

What's not to feel old and young about at the same time?

Not really. More things make me feel old than young. I see many newly qualified people who look young enough to be still at school, that makes me feel old. I teach, and am now teaching children and I used to teach one of their parents .... that makes me feel positively ancient. And sometimes polite young people have got up to offer me their bus seat ..... very kindly. In one place near Glasgow that I visited a couple of years ago, I was actually helped across the road. Now that did nothing to help my notions of being still middle aged and capable.

A couple of years ago, I was feeling pretty good about something I had bought at Bed, Bath & Beyond. When I got back to Marshall's at the other end of the mall, the young cashier looked at the bag and said "You walked all they way from there? Good for you !"

Sometimes, you just have to laugh.

The lady in the store asked if I wanted a buggy to carry out a 12-pack of Coke. I told her I had walked all the way from the back of the store with it and did not need one. She said, "you must be a strong lady!" That weighs nothing second to patio blocks.

About the time I was being retired from the military for being too old, I was invited to sit on the board of a national organization, as they wanted some young people, with fresh ideas.

When the retirement was done, I went to university. My first day of registration was the exact same day my daughter's grade one registration. So, she came with me to mine, and I went with her to hers! It was a weird day.

My mother in law who is 86 speaks to me like I am twelve at times and makes me feel like a kid and is always telling me what to do when she comes visit and then my son will come out with something like did they have TV's when you were a kid Mam and brings me back to reality.

I told 2 guys working on my fence I would move some concrete blocks that were in the way. They looked at me and said we'll do that for you..they're pretty heavy. I looked at them and said "I'm the one who put them there"

well, maybe not quite but - once I tooted and it came out liquid, not gas - - an event that might happen w/more frequency if you were old or young.

Yes, when the hot teen girls at the mall look at me with disgust when I oogle them.
