1998 Ford F150 won't shift into 4x4?

I have a 98 ford f150 XL and it will not shift into 4x4. It has a lever on the floor and it won't move out of 2hi no matter how hard i try to move it while the truck is at a stop. What could bs causing this problem and how much will it cost to get fixed?

This problem can be anything from a bent linkage to an internal problem with the gear box. Typically what happens is that a gear in the gear box will no longer engage due to the fact that it may be frozen on the shaft. One way to try and loosen it up would be to force the 2 wheel hi in while moving slowly forward. Sometimes this causes the gear to come loose.

Get under the truck and try drenching the transfer case linkages with good lubricant. if a good lube or even disassembling and reassembling the linkages doesnt fix it then you will have to disassemble the transfer case. one of the shift forks sound jammed and depending on what tcase you have it may or.may not be easy to fix.

Bad ignition switch interlock, also related to the neutral safety switch.
