Good tankmates for ram cichlids......?

I've decided to redo my 30 gal and have decided on a pair of german rams. I want some equally brightly colored fish to go along with them. I've looked at killifish, rainbow fish and knight gobies.

Would this stocking work and if so how many of each? I'm also open to suggestions to go with the rams

Update:

It's actually not a new setup. This tank has been running for almost a year. That's why I want to add the rams to it. I have a school of yoyo loaches in it now with a bristlenose pleco that will be movd into the 55 once I get the rams, so the tank is ready for them

Update 2:

Peaceful tetras generally make good tankmates for ram cichlids. However, a pair of spawning rams can get feisty, so be aware of that.

Rams care more about pH than many other aquarium fish, preferring a lower pH of around 6. They also like a slightly higher temperature.

Adult cardinal tetras make good tankmates, peaceful, larger than neons, and thrive in acidic waters. I'd get about 8 or 9.

    Hi Tabitha

German Blue Rams are nitrate sensitive fish that aren't suited to a new set up. They need to go into a tank that's already matured so if your 30gal is cycled they'd be okay but you have to keep the nitrates down to below 20ppm. As to the tankmates:

Killifish are territorial and wouldn't mix well with peaceful fish like GBRs so I wouldn't recommend them.

Rainbow fish are shoaling fish and need extremely hard water so they wouldn't be compatible either.

Knight Gobies are essentially marine fish (although they are sometimes kept in freshwater they are far more suited to a marine tank) that, even in fresh water need salt in the tank. Again, this would make them incompatible with GBRs.

Since GBRs are SA Cichlids why not keep some other (non Cichlid) South American fish with them? Fish that would do well include Cory Catfish in a group of 5 and some of the Tetras (Neon or Cardinal) in a small group of 7. There are other compatible fish but they'd require far larger aquaria.

    Good luck and best wishes
