Can I connect to a minecraft 1.6 server with minecraft 1.5.1 version?
So I run my own server that just me and a few friends play on. It is currently at 1.5.1 but one of my friends can't connect because he is on 1.6. If I ran a 1.6 server can friends still on 1.5.1 connect to it or do they have to update to 1.6?

Everyone must update to 1.6 to play. There are some ways to downgrade back to a different version if you wish, though. But yes. If you update the server to 1.6, everyone must update in order to play
