why is my steering wheel stiff?

I have a 2000 Mercedes C230 Kompressor and today the steering got really heavy. it was all of a sudden. there is no fluid leaking I left paper all beneath the car for over 30 minutes both with engine running, stopped and while trying to move the wheel and there were no drips.(I also saw nothing on the ground where it started) It feels more softer when the car is moving but at stops it gets very hard to move. what could be wrong and how much could it be to repair? I can add more details about what I find if required.

Update:

thanks for the quick answers guys I'll check fluid tomorrow morning and give it more time to get more information from other contributors. before selecting a best answer, though I may leave this one up for voters because all answers right now seem good.

Update 2:

After turning the car on today, the steering was normal for a bit but then it got hard again after taking it out of the driveway.

Update 3:

So I checked the fluid and belt, and tire pressure. all was ok so I'm going to have to take it into a mechanic to figure out what's wrong with it. I think it might be the pump though.

It sounds like the power steering belt either came off or the tensioner is worn out and the pump isn't turning.

  • Just because you're not leaking fluid doesn't mean your power steering pump isnt bad. Mine went bad and didn't leak fluid. I changed it out and it ran fine again.
